Discography
OF SISTER LIZ TILTON
Liz, younger sister of Martha, was a band singer in the late 1930s to mid 1940s. She sang in West Coast supper clubs in the late 1930s and performed with the following Orchestras: Buddy Rogers (1938), Ken Baker (1939), Bob Crosby (1941-1942, when the band had returned to its "Dixieland" roots), Ozzie Nelson and Tommy Dorsey (1943), Jan Garber (late 1943 to 1944, during the period when Jan switched from a "sweet" sound to "swing," although the recording ban of 1942-1944 made things difficult). With Bob Crosby's band, she didn't just work behind the mic, but also would dance with the guitarist, Nappy (Snappy) Lamare. Nappy, recalls another Crosby band member, did "... a funny jitterbug routine with Liz Tilton, who sang with the band at the time, that always was a show-stopper." Liz also recorded and appeared in several Soundie films (early music videos) with Matty Malneck and His Orchestra, a combo led by the well-known violinist and songwriter. Examples are: "Azusa" (1946), "Just The Other Day" (1946) and "(Ah Yes) There's Good Blues Tonight" (1946), all directed by Dave Gould. She was also is the vocalist/actress of Soundies titled "Abercrombie Had a Zombie" (1941) with Lee Murray and backed by Bob Crosby and His Orchestra; and "Any Bonds Today?" (1942). Later, mostly single, she remained active at intervals in the early 1950s (for example, with Billy May and His Orchestra in the early 1950s) and recorded several transcription discs for Armed Forces radio with Sam Donahue and His Orchestra. Liz left entertaining, for the most part, after marrying Bruce Hoffine on July 14, 1941 , who had driven a tank destroyer in North Africa in WWII, for which he received the Purple Heart. Bruce passed away in 2005, surviving Liz who passed away in 2003. According to Jon Vannersen, Martha's son by her second marriage, Bruce help filled the gap when Jon's own father, Leonard, passed away in 1962; Jon considered Liz's husband Bruce a "great guy." |
